Can you avoid a head-on collision? Perhaps

You would more than likely agree that one of the most terrifying and dangerous types of car accident is a head-on collision. When these accidents occur at highway speeds and above, they often result in catastrophic wreckage from which few people walk away.

These accidents often occur at night, but in reality, they can happen at any time of day. Just because it's daytime doesn't mean you can let your guard down. You may travel the same Connecticut roads every day without incident, and then one day your luck runs out. You see another vehicle headed right for yours. The fact is, you may have only seconds to respond.

Do you know what to do with those seconds?

It always seems as though the victim driver couldn't avoid the head-on collision caused by a wrong-way driver. In some instances, that may be true, but it may provide you with some relief to know that isn't always the case. If you know what to do with the precious seconds you may have, you could avoid the head-on collision or at least increase your chances of survival by following these tips:

  • Make sure you look as far ahead of you as possible. The more notice you have of a wrong-way driver heading your way, the more time you have to respond.
  • Staying to the right of whatever roadway you drive helps you avoid a wrong-way vehicle, since they tend to stay to your left. Also, the further to the right you remain, the quicker you can get off the road and out of that driver's way.
  • If you do see another vehicle coming right at you, slow down. This could give you more time for evasive action. Moreover, it also gives more time for the wrong-way driver to see you and get back into his or her lane.
  • Steer your vehicle to the right, never the left. Even if a collision occurs, it may not be head-on and increase your chances of survival. In addition, if the other driver realizes where he or she is, the natural instinct is to move to the right, so if you move to the left, you could move back into the other vehicle's path.

With these tips, you may have a better chance of avoiding a head-on collision. Even if you make contact, your actions could keep you from suffering fatal injuries. More than likely, if a crash occurs, you will suffer injuries for which you may pursue compensation from the driver who failed to remain in his or her lane or on the correct side of the highway.
