Overcoming TBI-related memory issues

Even with all researchers do know, the human brain remains a mystery in many ways. For this reason, it can be nearly impossible to predict what kinds of lasting effects a particular individual will have after suffering a traumatic brain injury.

What researchers do know is that, even if your doctor says you have recovered from your initial injury, you may still have issues, and if you are like other TBI sufferers, it means memory problems. For some reason, the resolution of memory issues often takes longer than other brain injury effects, if it goes away at all.

What can you do about it?

Not being able to remember things can quickly cause frustration. You may experience issues remembering new information, daily activities or appointments and events. Researchers recommend that you employ one or more of the following techniques to help improve your memory, or at least remind you of what you forgot:

  • The brain works much like any other muscle in that, the more you use it, the stronger it gets. Practice memorizing things such as song lyrics, quotes and jokes.
  • It may sound cliché, but keeping a journal may help, since the act of putting pen to paper often helps with the retention of information. Make sure you put it somewhere you can easily find it, date your entries and write as much as you can for future reference.
  • Play games that require you to think, problem solve and use your memory. This goes back to the theory of "the more you use your brain, the stronger it gets."
  • Try to decipher ingredients in your food. This gets your brain working.
  • Create a memory board upon which you can put photos, notes and other things you remember. This tool may be especially useful if your TBI caused you to forget aspects of your life prior to the accident.

You may find other strategies that work better for you, and that's good. The important thing is that you keep practicing and working your brain and memory.

Seek support where you need it

Hopefully you have a support network to help you through this challenging and often frustrating time in your life. Part of that network may include an attorney to help you pursue compensation from the party or parties deemed responsible for your injuries.
