How can I safely clear snow from my property?

Residents of Connecticut are certainly no strangers to snow. As a result, snow and slush can build up on sidewalks and walkways and potentially cause serious slip-and-fall injuries. While snow clearing during winter is important, it’s also important to stay safe while doing so. In this case, Travelers offers the following tips.

Take multiple trips

After a bad storm, your home will likely be covered in snow. In this case, several attempts at clearing your property are better than trying to do it all in one go. Snow can be extremely heavy and when there is a lot of it on the ground, you’ll have your work cut out for you. Taking multiple trips will preserve your health and well-being. In general, it’s best to take breaks every half hour or so.

Stretch before shoveling

Snow shoveling is a strenuous activity. Much like any other physical activity, you should take a time to stretch before getting started. Bending side to side or even running in place will prime your body for the work ahead. Stretching before shoveling will prevent injuries from occurring, including strains and sprains that may put you out of commission.

Dress warm

While you may break a sweat, it’s still important to dress appropriately. Layers are key in this case. As you get warmer you can discard layers to stay comfortable, while also ensuring your skin is protected against frigid air. Also, make sure you have water accessible while you’re shoveling. It’s still possible to become dehydrated even in cold temperatures.
