How can I ensure kitchen safety over the holidays?

Families all over New Haven will soon be busy preparing holiday meals for friends and family. Along with the many tasty dishes and camaraderie comes a risk of a kitchen accident, especially when home cooks don’t take the proper safety steps. In this case, Everyday Health offers the following kitchen tips to keep you and your loved ones safe this holiday season.

De-clutter your kitchen

A busy kitchen is not necessarily a safe kitchen. While it may be convenient to have everything you need to prepare a meal within arm’s reach it can increase the risk of fire. Keep flammable objects away from your stove, including hand towels and oven mitts. Also, decorate the kitchen sparingly to further reduce the risk of a fire breaking out.

Never leave the stove unattended

While you may be tempted to chat with family while cooking, never leave your stove unattended. A pot can boil over before you even know it, which can cause a fire in a heartbeat. Others could be injured by open flames, including kids. If you must leave the stove briefly, enlist another person to watch over things until you return.

Make sure your smoke alarms are working

The only way your smoke alarm can save you and your family is if it’s working. Accordingly, never turn off your smoke alarm while cooking. While false alarms can be annoying, a working smoke alarm is a crucial component of fire safety in the home. Additionally, make sure you test the alarm once a month and replace the batteries at least once a year.
