What is traumatic brain injury?

Whether due to a car accident or as a result of poorly maintained property, negligent behavior can cause a great deal of harm. This is especially true when it comes to traumatic brain injury (TBI), which can have lifelong effects or even result in loss of life. The Mayo Clinic explains the basics of TBI, including symptoms and prevention.

Cause of TBI

There are a number of occurrences that can result in a serious head injury. Vehicular collisions are a common cause, particularly for people who ride motorcycles. Slip and fall accidents can also result in TBI, which is a serious issue for young children and the elderly. Other causes include participating in sporting activities as well as acts of violence.

Symptoms to Look For

TBIs are also associated with a wide range of physical and mental symptoms. In terms of physical effects, mild injuries are associated with headache, nausea, slurred speech, dizziness, and loss of consciousness. When injuries are more severe symptoms can include seizures, pupil dilation, loss of coordination, numbness, and even coma in extreme cases. Cognitive effects include confusion, problems concentrating, depression and/or anxiety, and strange behavior (such as unexplained hostility).

How It Can Be Prevented

While you can’t always avoid accidents, there are steps you can take to lower your risk of TBI. When traveling by vehicle always wear a seatbelt. If you’re riding a bicycle or motorcycle, be sure to always wear a helmet (even if it’s not mandated by law). To prevent falls, property must be well-maintained (i.e. cracking steps or sidewalks should be remedied as soon as possible), and homes should be clear of clutter and easy to navigate if you live with seniors.
