Detailing "The Fatal Four"

A good number of New Haven residents find a great deal of personal satisfaction in their careers as construction workers. There is good reason for such contentment; construction workers play a vital role in community development. Yet for all of the rewards that a career in the construction industry offers, it is also rife with risks. Construction routinely ranks at or near the top of the list of the most dangerous professions. Indeed, according to statistics shared by The Industrial Safety and Hygiene News, one in 10 construction workers are injured on the job every year.

Not all construction accidents are created equal; in fact, rarely are there injuries that most would consider to be minor. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration reports that as recently as 2016, over 21 percent of all workplace fatalities reported from the U.S. private sector occurred on construction sites. While the accidents that take the lives of construction workers are tragic, they do offer information that may help prevent such events from occurring in the future. OSHA has compiled enough workplace fatality data from the construction industry to identify the types of injuries most likely to cause worker deaths. Called "The Fatal Four," these include:

  • Falls
  • Being struck by objects
  • Electrocutions
  • Caught-in/between accidents

"Caught-in/between" accidents refer those cases where workers were caught up into functioning construction equipment or in between equipment and edifices or surfaces.

Knowing the most common types of construction accidents puts the onus on contractors and site foremen to put added security measures in place to ensure safety on the job site. Those who lose family members in construction accidents may be entitled to special benefits through workers' compensation programs
