Can I file a personal injury claim if I think I suffered whiplash

If someone was negligent and caused your fall and resulting injury, it may be possible to make a claim in Connecticut and even file a lawsuit if necessary. Of course, medical evidence will be necessary to prove a case of whiplash as well as the extent of your personal injury damages.

It is often best to seek a medical evaluation as soon as possible after your trauma, but certainly if you feel discomfort.

Whiplash is a soft tissue injury

Because the injury is typically of a soft tissue variety, it may be your ligaments, discs and muscles that have suffered damage in your neck or back area. If so, they may not show up in a basic X-ray and you will want to consider discussing with your physician having a magnetic resonance imaging test or CT scan to see if there is damage to those soft tissues.

You will also want to pay attention to any growing symptoms. Whiplash, often unseen, but very much felt, can cause many unexpected symptoms. Some of these symptoms can last a very long time.

Physical signs of whiplash

Interestingly, whiplash injury is often a silent impairment and you may not have even felt it immediately after the trauma. It can be a day or many days later, that you felt the effects. Some of those physical affects you may have felt include the following:

  • Back pain or pain between the shoulder blades
  • Neck, shoulder, arm or hand stiffness or pain
  • Headaches

Less obvious symptoms of whiplash

However, there are also some less obvious symptoms that can result from a case whiplash. These include some of the following:

  • Inability to fall asleep or stay asleep
  • Fatigue
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness
  • Memory and concentration
  • Irritability

Your doctor may suggest conservative treatment and you will want to be sure to be relatively compliant with medical advice and pursue such treatment. Such treatment may include over the counter pain relievers, like ibuprofen. Physical therapy and massage can also be helpful. Other measures include heat, ice, and gentle exercises.
