How does workers’ compensation work?

If you get injured at work in Connecticut, you will start hearing about workers’ compensation. Most people know about this insurance but do not really know what it is or what it will offer them. HowStuffWorks defines it as insurance that an employer carries for employees to compensate them if they are injured while on the job.

These benefits will pay for your medical expenses and lost wages. In addition, workers’ compensation may also pay for any rehabilitation you need and future wages that you will lose out on due to the incident. In the event of your death, your family may receive money for funeral expenses and other related expenses. Accepting these benefits, though, removes your right to sue your employer for the situation that caused your injury.

Workers’ compensation is something that is mandated by law. Employers typically get this insurance through private companies, but each state runs its own system. States can set the required coverage limits, decide what injuries or illnesses are covered and determine the amount of compensation you will receive.

The main reason for workers’ compensation is to prevent litigation. Before this system, if you were injured at work, you would have to take your employer to court and sue them. It could take a lot of your own money to hire an attorney and a lot of time to work through the court system. With the system as it is now, you do not have to mess with the legal system to get compensation. This is general information only and is not intended to provide legal advice.
