Drunk driver faces charges after killing jogger in Connecticut

Many people underestimate the effects of alcohol consumption. "Just one drink won't hurt," they think. But one Connecticut man, who told police he had only one beer, veered right into the path of a jogger while on Route 17 in North Haven. The jogger was struck and taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital, where he died that evening. The drunk driver is now facing criminal charges.

The 72-year-old driver was arrested for DUI and second degree assault after failing field sobriety tests. He paid the $50,000 bond and was released from jail. The State's Attorney's Office may file additional charges.

The fatal car accident happened on the afternoon of July 16. The jogger, a man believed to be 20 years old, was jogging along Middletown Avenue and Route 16 when the driver reportedly crossed a double yellow line and then went back into the correct lane. According to a witness, he then veered into the path of the man and hit him. The two were traveling in opposite directions.

The impact rendered the jogger unconscious. His leg was bleeding so profusely that it had to be amputated. He was put on life support, but died hours later. The road was closed for a few hours following the crash.

When drunk driving leads to another person's death, the driver can face serious consequences. He or she can face jail time, license revocation or suspension, vehicle impoundment and hefty fines. In addition, the person could also be sued by the victim's family. The family may file a wrongful death lawsuit to recover compensation for damages caused by the drunk driver's negligence.
