Drunk driver hits three cars and crashes into gas station

Individuals who drive while under the influence of alcohol or drugs pose a major threat to public safety. A car weighs thousands of pounds and, when operated by an individual who is drunk, becomes a dangerous weapon. The events that transpired when one 31-year-old Connecticut woman recently chose to drive drunk, prove the adverse effects alcohol has on an individual's ability to process information, reason and react.

According to a police report, the 31-year-old woman was arrested after exiting the freeway and speeding towards a retail gas station. Upon exiting the freeway, the woman failed to reduce her speed as she approached the store. She proceeded to sideswipe two vehicles and rear-end another before crashing into the store.

Two individuals, a 24-year-old man and 21-year-old mother, suffered injuries and required medical care. The 31-year-old driver responsible for causing the accident also suffered injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital. Results of a blood alcohol test show the woman was "more than three times the legal limit". However, before police could arrest her, the woman fled the hospital.

She was eventually arrested after attempting to obtain a car accident report for insurance purposes. She currently faces criminal charges including DUI, reckless driving and reckless endangerment. When questioned about the accident, the woman stated "it was dark and I didn't know the speed limit".

Thankfully, no one was killed in this drunk driving accident. According to Mothers Against Drunk Driving, in Connecticut alone, an estimated 36 percent of fatal car accidents in 2012 were drunk driving related. Drivers, passengers and pedestrians who suffer injuries in a drunk driving car accident would be wise to discuss their case with an attorney.
