Connecticut man dies after crashing into stopped DOT truck

Employees of Connecticut's Department of Transportation work year-round to ensure portions of the state's road and highway system are safe for travel. During the winter months, DOT crews can often be seen stopped along roadways assisting stranded drivers or making repairs to safety equipment. When encountering any stopped vehicle while traveling, drivers are advised to slow down and maneuver a vehicle to allow for ample passing room.

A recent fatal car accident involved a DOT truck that was stopped along the highway. At the time of the accident, two DOT employees were working outside of the work truck repairing a broken light fixture. At approximately 11:30 a.m., police say a 22-year-old driver lost control of his SUV and crashed into the back of the unoccupied DOT truck.

The 22-year-old driver suffered serious injuries in the crash. He was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital where he subsequently died. Thankfully, both DOT workers were outside of the vehicle when the crash occurred and were not seriously injured in the crash.

This tragic fatal accident is a solemn reminder to all Connecticut drivers of the importance of remaining alert and vigilant while operating a motor vehicle. While police continue to investigate this accident to determine those factors that may have contributed to the 22-year-old losing control of his vehicle and crashing into the DOT truck, it's likely that speed and distracted driving were at least partially to blame.

For safety reasons, drivers are advised to only stop along a highway when absolutely necessary. In cases where stopping is unavoidable, drivers should ensure they pull a vehicle all the way over to the right hand shoulder of the road and engage their vehicle's hazard lights. Additionally, drivers who encounter stopped vehicles should slow down and allow the vehicle and occupants ample room while passing.
