Teen dies in car accident involving another teen driver

As most Connecticut teens head back to school, the mother of one 17-year-old is left with only memories of her beloved daughter. The girl, who would have been a senior in high school, was recently and tragically killed in a car accident. This and other similar accidents in which teenagers have been killed and injured are typically the result of a teen driver who is inexperienced, distracted or who has been drinking.

According to the police accident report, the fatal accident occurred just before 1 a.m. as a 17-year-old driver and three teenage occupants drove northbound along a city street. At that time, the driver appeared to veer off of the road. Upon attempting to correct his driving error, he then lost control of the vehicle which left the roadway and crashed into a tree.

The 17-year-old girl, who was riding in the back seat of the vehicle, was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. She was thrown from the vehicle and declared dead at the accident scene by first responders. The three other teens involved in the accident all sustained minor injuries.

While it's difficult to speculate as to what factors may have contributed to this accident, the 17-year-old driver was in violation of Connecticut's Graduated Drivers License laws. Under Connecticut GDL laws new drivers are not allowed to transport teenage passengers. Additionally, for the first year after obtaining a driver's license, drivers are not allowed to drive between the hours of 11 p.m. and 5 a.m.

Police continue to investigate this fatal accident and criminal charges may be forthcoming against the teen driver. Additionally, the family of the 17-year-old who was killed may choose to pursue a wrongful death claim in an effort to recover compensation related to loss of life, pain and suffering and funeral expenses.
